ABOUT
ESTABLISHED IN 1967, MUTUAL ART SPACE IS A LEADING INSTITUTION DEDICATED TO THE EXHIBITION, STUDY, AND PRESERVATION OF BRUTALIST AND MODERNIST ART AND ARCHITECTURE.
MISSION
We are committed to presenting bold, uncompromising art that challenges conventions and sparks dialogue. Our mission is to preserve the brutalist heritage while promoting contemporary artists who continue to push the boundaries of form, material, and meaning in the 21st century.
OUR HISTORY
FOUNDING
Mutual Art Space is founded by architect Robert Chen and art historian Sarah Morrison in a converted industrial space in downtown Manhattan. The inaugural exhibition features 45 works by emerging brutalist artists.
EXPANSION
The museum doubles its gallery space and establishes the Research Institute for Brutalist Studies, becoming the first institution dedicated to academic study of the movement.
DIGITAL INITIATIVE
Launches one of the first museum websites and begins digital cataloging of the permanent collection, making the archive accessible to global audiences.
REVITALIZATION
Major renovation led by architects from the Office of Metropolitan Architecture creates new flexible gallery spaces while preserving the building's brutalist character.
